The Challenge: Complete Ironman #4 and attempt to qualify for the IM World Championships in Kona, HA. The Challenger: Poncho Smith. The Verdict: 9th place finish in his age group, an incredible run and one step closer to that coveted spot! The goal of every Ironman athlete is to get to Kona. For some, it's a far-off dream and for others it's within grasp with some determination and dedication. This is Poncho's third year competing in Ironmans and each year he's gotten a little closer. Congratulations Poncho on an amazing race and we are all confident next year will be your year!
This is the 3rd year of Louisville running an Ironman and, though it's been hot in the past, we lucked out this year with temperatures only reaching the mid-70's. The swim
is different than all other IM's with a time trial start due to the narrowness of the entry point into the Ohio River. Uponing exiting the water, the athletes 112 mile bike ride takes them through some hilly terrain and Kentucky
roads. With 2 disciplines down, the big one looms: the marathon. Louisville has a 2-loop course that takes you behind University of Louisville, just a block away from Churchill Downs and finishes in the lively downtown area
called 4th Street Live.
